RONALDO’S THROWN CAPTAIN BAND AUCTIONED OUT FOR $75,000 TO RAISE FUND FOR SICK CHILD IN SERBIA
Portugal’s captain, Christiano Ronaldo angrily flung his armband to the ground after his stoppage-time equalizer was incorrectly disallowed in Belgrade. The piece has been sold to an unidentified bidder for $75,000 in Serbia, at a charity auction on Friday.
The blue armband was put up for online bidding by a Serbian humanitarian group to raise money for a six-month-old baby suffering from muscular spinal atrophy.
Within seconds of the end of the world cup qualifier, referee Danny makkeile waved play on after Ronaldo’s effort had crossed the line, with the linesman failing to take note. The former Real Madrid trainee angrily threw his Captain’s band and walked off the pitch which was picked by a firefighter and donated to a charity organization.
Former Portugal international, Fernando Meira slammed Ronaldo’s tantrum whilst the referee tendered a public apology to the Juventus star for denying him and the selecao their winning goal.
Serbian defender, Stefan Mitrovic has since gone on to dispute Ronaldo’s claim that the ball had crossed the line despite video footage showing otherwise.
