Despite been a rookie manager, Chelsea’s famous Russian oligarch still went ahead to install him at the helm. Although, there was an element of sentimentality attached as Chelsea is widely known for appointing mangers with a winning track record, but lampard was an exception.

As a rookie, coupled with the fact that Chelsea were serving a two window transfer ban, expectations were low, infact, last season was an aberration due to certain mitigating factors not forgetting the colossal loss of Eden Hazard a proven match winner.

As expected, and predicted there were highs and lows. A top Four finish and an FA cup final appearance was largely viewed as a sign of good things to come due to the fact that the feat was accomplished without a single signing and the use of mostly academy boys.

Fast track to two month later and Frank lampard now has a plethora of world class players at his disposal. During the summer a spending spree of over two hundred million pounds was sanctioned by Roman Abrahamovic which saw up to 7 players come in, namely Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Harvertz and, Edouard Mendy.

The problem now is how to get the best out of this bunch of players with undoubted quality. The new season is still at it’s infancy stage with just five games played in the EPL, one game played in the UCL and, two played in the EFL cup.

Results have been mixed. An unconvincing performance against Brighton, while against Westbrom and Southampton some calamitous defending and individual errors has sofar cost Chelsea valuable points. While going forward the team can be quite exciting to watch, but any time the opposition attacks you always get the feeling that the blues will concede.

Despite the new signings Chelsea are still a side with a soft underbelly. Old failings have not yet been addressed, the team can’t hold slender lead.
