The Deputy Governor of Kogi State and Steering Committee Chairman of APPEALS, Chief Edward David Onoja today, the 19th of June, paid a visit to the Agricultural Development Project (ADP) plant in Felele, Lokoja and Ogbogbo, Igalamela LGA to facilitate the distribution of farming materials/implements to Kogi State Farmers under the APPEALS project.

Whilst in Lokoja, The MD of the ADP, Mr Bello Ogirima appreciated the efforts of the New Direction government in the area of agriculture. He stated that due to the payment of the counterpart fund by the Kogi State Government, not less than 10,000 people will become beneficiaries. Bello described the ADP as the project charged with executing agricultural policies and promised to – in line with the State Government’s stance on sustainable agriculture – effect policies that will change the fortunes of Farmers in Kogi State.

The State Coordinator for APPEALS, Dr. Sani Ozomata described the event as timely, as the State is determined to return her farmers to the farms to quell the scourge of food scarcity and ultimately, revive the economy which has been on a standstill since the beginning of the pandemic. He further stated that enhancing small and medium scale farmers, and making sure that farming input gets to the farmers at the right time remains an ever-present commitment of the project.

Speaking further, Dr. Ozomata said that Over 698 Rice farmers will benefit from the materials to be shared. He also said that the program has partnered with the Kogi State Rice Mill, and provided over 1720 Hectares of land for Rice farming. He revealed that a total of 633 Million Naira has been approved to fund the VCIP (Value chain investment plan) produced by the farmers throughout the State. He appreciated Chief Onoja for showing great leadership as the State Steering Committee Chairman, disclosing that his wisdom and foresight has been of great help to the committee and its set goals.

In his address, Chief Edward Onoja appreciated the initiative of Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello in safeguarding the lives of Kogites, which he said was evident through his steady hand in ensuring that Kogi remains Covid-19 free, and his determination to restore Kogi State’s economy to the enviable heights it was enjoying before the pandemic. He described the APPEALS project as one that is dear to the Governor’s heart, as its policies align with his Agricultural Revolution Agenda already made clear since his inauguration in early 2016.

The project, which he says focuses on Rice, Cassava and Cashew, is aimed at promoting food sufficiency, while also putting Nigeria on the map as a net exporter. He stated that with a population of over 70% farmers, Kogi State remains ever committed to catering to their needs. Onoja said that it is the plan of the State to promote Agriculture as a veritable means of business for every citizen until Kogi claims the title of the “Food Basket” of the Nation.

Chief Onoja then supervised the distribution of Rice Seedlings, Pressure sprayers, Fertilizers, Herbicides and Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) at Ajaokuta LGA and Ogbogbo, at Igalamela Odolu LGA. He urged the farmers to make good use of what was provided, and to expand their businesses through the initiative.
